WOW Christmas: 30 Top Christian Artists and Holiday Songs Specifications
It was only a matter of time before the folks behind the wildly successful WOW series turned their eyes toward Christmas. After all, holiday releases by Christian artists flood the market every year, and there's plenty of stock to choose from. WOW Christmas does, indeed, capture a nice range of styles and artists from releases over the last few years. Among the sweeter moments are Michael W. Smith's new standard, "Emmanuel," Point of Grace's angelic "O Holy Night," Rebecca St. James's quirky "Sweet Little Jesus Boy," and the Mark Schultz-Nichole Nordeman gentle treatment of "Silent Night." There are a couple of curiosities here, as well: Avalon jazzing up the old standard "Winter Wonderland" with a Manhattan Transfer-like big-band sound; and Fred Hammond's soulful "Go Tell It on the Mountain." And if that's not offbeat enough, we also get the flat-out weirdness of Audio Adrenaline's punked-out "Little Drummer Boy." For the most part, though, WOW Christmas spices up the classic Yule tunes with freshness and creativity, making it a must disc for your holiday party. --Michael Lyttle

You Light Up My Life: Inspirational Songs Specifications
This 1997 album debuted at the top of the pop, country, and Christian album charts. Sadly, it underscored the artistic vacuum surrounding Rimes in the wake of her explosive 1996 hit single "Blue." At a time when female country singers were being lauded for their growing depth and sophistication, this collection of "inspirational songs" seemed anachronistic and downright corny. The concept was more appropriate to a TV-marketed album by some faded legend than a singer so young. Even the best singers would have difficulty bringing anything new to the over-recorded title song, "Bridge Over Troubled Waters," "God Bless America," "Amazing Grace," and "The Star Spangled Banner," songs impossible to redefine. That might explain why Rimes's vocals throughout are as soulless and detached as her performance of "Blue" was passionate and earthy. At times, she sounds as if she's singing from a teleprompter. The album's success is undeniable. Whether it did her talent justice is another matter. --Rich Kienzle

Platinum Gospel: Staple Singers
Platinum Gospel: Staple Singers Review
he Staple Singers are one of the most unique gospel acts of all time. Their sound has stretched from delta blues to disco and funk. Late last year Mavis Staples released You Are Not Alone, an album produced by Jeff Tweedy. It won the Grammy for Best Americana Record. The record opens and closes with new recordings of numbers originally recorded by Mavis with The Staple Singers and released by HOB Gospel. The new renditions pay homage to Mavis' beginnings by staying very true to form. Now you can rediscover all of the group's best work released by HOB with this newly re-mastered collection.
